Realistic: if you ever consider going to war, watch this film. Better yet, read the book. Remarque is a great great writer, all of his books.

Strange and yet sad. The actors are American. The ending is heartbreaking.

This movie literaly is the best war movie ever made. Not because of big budget special effects, but the plotline is what makes it so good(not to mention what is probably the most realistic battle scenes ever made). The ending is extremely sad, unusual for any war movie. And when the hero goes back to his home on leave, what he sees proves the phrase, "You can never go home again".

Classic, all-too-familiar story of homefront war propaganda, and its stark contrast with the realities of armed conflict. Being told from the German side adds to the interestingness of this film. Considering the technology and story telling tools of 1929, this version holds up very well to the test of time, and we find ourselves in the end almost as worn down as the main character. "Empfehlenswert," as the Germans say.
